Nepal's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Partnership Formed By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.

The late summer revolt was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

Broader Political Discussions Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's dedication to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
