Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay System This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the right to contest specific calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
